Let’s Touch Our Future Competition

Nejdet Uludoğan and Deniz Atam sophomores from Department of Nursing won the third runner-up in the “Let’s Touch Our Future” competition which aims to improve the quality of life of elderly and disabled people organized by the Vocational School of Health Services, Elderly Care Program, in the “SPEAKING HANDS LISTENING SOCIETY” project. We congratulate them and wish them continued success.

It has been reported that there are 3 million people with Hepatitis B, almost 750 thousand people with Hepatitis C, and about 17 million unregistered people living with hepatitis in Turkey. July 28 is observed as World Hepatitis Day by World Health Organization and World Hepatitis Alliance to raise awareness about viral hepatitis, and to call for access to treatment.

It has been stated that overweight population made up 33%, and obese population made up 32% of overall population in Turkey, and the country was up against a serious health problem. Asst. Prof. Dr. Elem Kocaçal Güler, Lecturer at Department of Nursing at IUE, reported that the number of overweight people increased up to 2.3 billion and number of obese people increased to 700 million worldwide in 2015.

The experts point out the importance of 4 year undergraduate education in nursing, a profession with an increasing importance in the field of healthcare. Assoc. Dr. Filiz Öğce, Head of Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), stated that as a result of the changes in the responsibilities of nurses, the need for offering undergraduate education became evident.

The spring awakening in nature also provokes the immune systems. The experts state that the body is prone to allergic reactions especially in the spring and one in every three people suffer from an allergic disease. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Öğçe, Head of IUE Department of Nursing, mentioned that allergies occurred because of an active immune system that reacts to things such as pollens, pet dander, foods, plants, bug bites, drugs, jewelry, etc. and based on World Health Organization statistics, 40% of world population suffered from allergic diseases.

The experts stated that every ten people in Turkey experienced sleep problems and that total sleep time in adults decreased 2 hours on average. Deniz Talaz, Lecturer at IUE Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing, pointed that quality of sleep depended on an uninterrupted and enough amount of sleep at an appropriate time.
