SLEEPING WELL IS THE FIRST STEP TO LIVING WELL
The experts stated that every ten people in Turkey experienced sleep problems and that total sleep time in adults decreased 2 hours on average. Deniz Talaz, Lecturer at IUE Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing, pointed that quality of sleep depended on an uninterrupted and enough amount of sleep at an appropriate time.
Talaz remarked that lack of quality sleep caused inattentiveness, tiredness, anxiety, depression. “Sleep problems bring along increase in traffic accidents and work accidents, difficulty performing day to day activities, joint and muscle pain, etc. They also cause cognitive, psychological, and physical problems such as being prone to infections, decrease in quality of life, health problems, etc.,” said Talaz. She also indicated that stress, work hours, exercise, heat and light and alcohol, tea, coffee consumption affected sleep patterns on a great deal. Falling asleep at wrong times and maintaining sleep decreased quality of life as well.
‘Not taken seriously but…’
Talaz pointed out that lack of quality sleep caused metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases. She said that sleep problems were not taken seriously, and sleeping well was very significant in terms of living well. Talaz said, “Sleep is very vital for living beings. It is not time wasted or interrupted, on the contrary, it is an active situation with physiological, psychological, and social aspects. An ideal sleeping time for adults is considered to be around 7-8 hours.”
