WATCH OUT FOR ALLERGENS!
The spring awakening in nature also provokes the immune systems. The experts state that the body is prone to allergic reactions especially in the spring and one in every three people suffer from an allergic disease. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Öğçe, Head of IUE Department of Nursing, mentioned that allergies occurred because of an active immune system that reacts to things such as pollens, pet dander, foods, plants, bug bites, drugs, jewelry, etc. and based on World Health Organization statistics, 40% of world population suffered from allergic diseases.
Pollen Allergy in Spring
With the increase in pollution and temperatures, allergic diseases would increase, indicated Öğçe and she stated the following:
“Changes in eating habits and environmental habits due to transitioning from village life and agricultural production to city life and industrial production caused allergic diseases to increase. Fast food eating habit, additives, vitamin deficiencies, cleaning materials, cosmetics, and paints with chemicals all trigger the allergic diseases. In addition to allergens such as medicines, food, and bugs, pollen allergy also increases in spring as the nature awakens. People who are allergic to pollens suffer from itchy, stuffy, and runny noses and sneezing, watery, red and itchy eyes which all effect the quality of life.”
‘Attention! It Might Be Life Threatening’
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Öğçe remarked that there was an increase in the prevalence of allergic disorders which the body developed an immune response, and different diseases, from a simple skin rash to life threatening cases, might have occurred as a result of that.
‘Hat-Sun Glasses- Shower Protection’
It is very important to strengthen one’s immune system to prevent allergic disorders, said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Öğçe, and she suggested getting tests done in order to identify the allergens. “Women should stay away from smoking and passive smoking during pregnancy and first year after giving birth. Family members with allergic background should avoid having pets at home. Allergy sufferers should wear hats and sun glasses outdoors, and should change clothes and shower to get rid of pollens that might have stuck on their clothing,” stated Öğçe.
